1651 - Laws are passed in Massachusetts forbidding poor people from adopting excessive styles of dress. 1835 - John Templeton, John Moore, Stanley Cuthbart and Ellen Ritchie were charged in Wheeling, Virginia with illegally teaching blacks to read.
